Northwest Argentina

Around Salta

As I moved north from Mendoza, I discovered a new Argentina that I hadn't seen yet. Tiny villages i the middle of the Andes and beautiful valleys where the european influence that is so strong elsewhere in the country disappears.
People's faces show indigenous traits, markets become more colourful with local fruits and vegetables, clothes look more and more Andean with colourful patchworks.
Under the summer burning sun, siestas become longer: in Villa Fertil, a small village in the San Juan valley, shops did not open until 8.30pm!
Choclo (mais, corn) is now in every dish, from humitas to locros, regional dishes that combine corn with meat...
And then there is folklore! music is everywhere, in every 'pena', a local restaurant/bar, and in the streets...

Along the Calchaqui valley

It's rainy season now, which gives this bit of the Andes amazing colours..

A sort of cactus, los cardones are everywhere along this valley...

La paletta del pintor
'The painter's palette' is given by the amazing combination of the colours of the andes in this valley with sun light...

Cachi

Cachi is a typical Andean village, with low colonial white buildings, a small  plaza, a no paved streets... a great atmosphere, a place for peace
