Along the beaches of northern Chile

The beaches north of La Serena

Finally, a well deserved beach break! Moving north from La Serena to northern Chile, one encounters some fine beaches, although the ocean water can be quite cold at times!

Isla Choras

Back in desert...

We saw this incredible cemetery of miners who worked in a nearby mine, and the famous hand in the desert... the other hand is in Punta del Este, Uruguay...

San Pedro de Atacama

After leaving Argentina for good in this trip, I am back in northern Chile.
San Pedro de Atacama is a small Andean town sorrounded by the Atacama desert, the highest desert in the world, and by the Andes, creating incredible landscapes.
While this is supposed to be the driest town on earth, when I arrived it rained a little, and the skies were unusually clouded, but the atmosphere was even more incredible... except for the stars. San Pedro is one of the best places to observe stars, but while i stayed nights were clouded and sadly we missed this incredible show.

The Death Valley

In the Atacama desert lies the Death Valley, an area of spectacular rock formations, from which we saw an amazing sunset, when the colour of the sun changes the whole landscape

El Tatio geysers
Up in the Andes, we waited for sunrise while watching geysers go off... the temperature went from freezing to very hot in just over an hours, and we bathed in a natural pool of hot water just by the mountains...

The salt lagoons

The Atacama is one of the richest regions of the world im minerals and salt. Salt flats ('salar') are present everywhere, and some form wonderful lagoons where one can swim, well there is no need to swim, the concentration of salt is more than enough to keep you afloat!
